They are talking about striking in the national media, a conversation started by an Alexander-Hamilton-moderate-conservative. This is it, it has hit the mainstream media and word is getting out to the people that aren’t necessarily in the 50501, and like organizations, loop.

Well this might be good. In order to achieve regime change and new elections with the protests, you’ll need the military on your side. You can never overthrow the government otherwise. So conservative people like this can help.

If we achieve new elections then great, it seems like there are pro-constitution conservatives in his basket, but I would be careful about installing a new regime with there help because it isn’t always a better regime.

The difference between a shithead like this, and any and all sane people, is that sane people could see this unnecessary shitstorm approaching from afar, while these stunted minds only seem to be able to see things only after things smack then in the face.

To he fair to Brooks (which I hate to do, since he is a shithead), he was very aware of the dangers of Trump and endorsed Hillary, Biden, and Kamala in the last three elections. He has even said that he was wrong about Bernie, and now acknowledges that his kind of economic populism is the only thing that could have stopped Trump’s fascist populism. That being said, he’s spent the last three decades promoting the kind of Regan-style neoliberalism and Bush-style imperialism that got us into this mess, so fuck him.

When we need to unite against a literal fascist, I’ll gladly stand with conservatives with whom I have serious policy disagreements. Telling them to fuck off will just strengthen Trump’s hold.

Once we’ve finished the fight against the MAGA cult, we can debate each other about policy without worrying about anyone getting disappeared.

In this case, you’re quite obviously “barking under the wrong tree”. Some people who call themselves conservative or moderate are quite capable of predicting what may happen.

Regarding the 2016 election, Brooks spoke in support of Hillary Clinton, applauding her ability to be “competent” and “normal” in comparison to her Republican counterpart, Donald Trump.[67][68] In addition, Brooks noted that he believed Clinton would eventually be victorious in the election, as he foresaw that the general American public would become “sick of” Trump.[67][68]

On the August 9, 2019, episode of the PBS NewsHour, Brooks suggested Trump may be a sociopath.

Not a secret, lifted from his Wikipedia page.

I would always advise checking a person’s background before saying things about them.

Proof that they only scream when they are getting stabbed themselves.

If folks can somehow retain one and only one thing if we get through all this without civil war:

R wants power, and they want to hurt anyone who doesn’t fit a fairly narrow demographic. That’s all they have ever wanted, and every policy or position out of R in the past many years is all the proof you need.

When R gets power they start breaking shit and hurting people. It’s the only outcome of modern conservatism. And when they say “enough is enough” it’s ONLY because the policies they supported and cheered for finally start to blow back on them.

IF we make it through this folks, DO NOT FORGET. Don’t vote R ever again, not for the lowliest local position, not for the highest position. Not for any position. I’m in my 50s and I’m telling you all that hate and control over those not like them are the only things from Republican mouths in as long as I’ve been old enough to pay attention. How polite they are about it has waxed and waned, but the direction they push for has always been the same.

(and don’t come at me with some shitty whataboutism - D sucks in their own way as a group, but that way is not this way)

      Edited to add -

This is so true that they tried to convince people it wasn’t true with a targeted rebranding in the 90s. I don’t think anyone bought it even then. Compassionate Conservatism

“Let’s beat the system by playing in the system’s rules!”

It’s reasons like this why we still don’t have single payer healthcare.

I am so fucking tired of the “vote blue no matter who!” This mentality continues to perpetuate the very inequality we keep facing. As long as liberals have their tvs and their diet cokes they can take any amount of abuse the system puts on them. “See the numbers are up! So you must be crazy if you think your situation is bad!” Is the dribble I heard consistently throughout the Genocide Joe administration. It ain’t just him though lemme tell you.

Chuck Schumer (and other democrats) voted yes for cloture giving more power to Elon.

John Fetterman is basically a republican ignoring everything his constituents voted him in for.

Kamala promising single payer healthcare during her first run. Yet as soon as she became the Democratic candidate in 2024 she ran sprinting the other way.

        https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/kamala-harris-wants-end-private-health-insurance-new-democratic-litmus-n964241

Do you not realize that Biden crafted the gun that Trump is firing at student visa protesters?

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxyLBZ5gMWc

the cages for children that were built by the Obama administration.

        https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/08/26/fact-check-obama-administration-built-migrant-cages-meme-true/3413683001/

and the constant drone striking from the obama administration.

Obama bailing out the banks because of the 2008 financial crisis.

Pelosi (and many ither democrats) with their insider trading.

Pelosi stiffing AOC for party leader and putting an old fuck with esophogeal cancer in instead.

Or the Democrats standing outside the Department of Education as it got raided. The most protected group of citizens couldn’t have the courage to force their way in. They just recorded and cried “look at what they’re doing! We are so helpless!”

The Democrats sitting idly by with stupid ping pong paddle signs as Al Green stood up and yelled at Trump. WORTHLESS.

How about anytime the Democrats have had The House, The Senate, and The Presidency they are always fucking useless? Saying they don’t have the power to do anything. Whine whine whine. Yet when Republicans come in they have absolute power and get their objectives DONE. I mean fuck they don’t give a rat’s ass about the law, If they want it done it will be done.

Anyone else is welcome to fill in the blanks on collasal democrat fumbles.

If you keep voting for them it signals they can keep getting away with not serving you. Their messaging is the very reason turnout was low. No one is motivated by Goldman Sachs approving your economic plan. By the end of Kamala’s campaign she was promising diet Trump policies. Why would I vote for diet deporter when I can have the real og? The messaging was brain dead.

Democrats do a better job at getting a Conservative elected than Conservatives themselves. They are a fucking joke and I am tired of everyone acting like the color blue is a savior. It’s not. We are on our own right now. The Democrats won’t save you.

It’s time we abandon the radioactive party that is Democrats and work towards a leftist movement. Talk to your neighbors, get to know people and their plights/struggles, show compassion and empathy to your fellow citizens, create a network of people who you would protect and would absolutely protect you, build up skills such as growing your own food, and volunteer at a soup kitchen. Try to lessen yours and others dependance on the powers that be as much as possible.

Democrats paved the way for a Trump presidency. Do not be surprised if violence is required to overcome this. These people use violence on you everyday, you just don’t call it that.

Until you see some major motion from the Democratic party, do not give them anymore of your time. For the love of god do not give them any of your money.

I am so fucking tired of the “vote blue no matter who!”

Can you point to the part of my comment where I said anything at all about voting for Democrats? Because I’m pretty sure I wrote a very lengthy comment about Republicans and Conservatives.

Giving R more power at any level is laughably foolish. Everyone understands that today, I just hope people remember it this time.

          I also included this:

(and don’t come at me with some shitty whataboutism - D sucks in their own way as a group, but that way is not this way)

And you gave me hundreds of words of whataboutism. 😂

I hope it was cathartic for you to get all that out, though.

Ok, how would you feel If I told people to vote third party then? It’s not voting for Republicans so we should be good right?

Yeah I know you included that last sentence so all criticisms of Democrats can be deflected by pointing to it. Oh my gosh you got me!!! My entire point is the dems we have now and in the past have been spineless/worthless cowards. I have as much disdain for Joe Biden as I do Donald Trump. He would have continued perpetuating his evil foreign policies if he won a second term. He would habe kept his terrible immigration policies. Same with Kamala

It seems you have forgotten we are in this mess because of democrat incompetence. I was trying to remind YOU because YOU seem to need a reminder.

Genocide Joe didn’t drop out and the dems paraded him around with no primary. This is all of their fault. Stop blaming voters for Democrats unpopulararity.

Do you think people would have been more motivated to vote for a democrat promising single payer healthcare? Cause I sure fucking do. Voters want better and I do not blame them.

This article feels a little disingenuous and seems written by someone who has only heard their friend complain about David Brooks. In his book “The Second Mountain,” Brooks goes into his mea culpa moments. He has on more than a few occasions admitted his errors. I would share citations, but it was a library loan and it’s on hold.

Those of us who protest against power, aren’t we looking for exactly the kind of change of hearts and minds such that Brooks is showing?

He is an honest person, but has had a lifetime of being honestly wrong about almost everything. Even with the mea culpas, he still apportions the blame for our current situation completely inappropriately. That said, I agree we are not in a position to turn away imperfect allies and I applaud him for trying to do something with whatever miniscule influence he retains.

When people say “you used to be able to have honest debate with the other side,” David is the only one who in my lifetime that may have been true for.

Well, no, because honest debate recognizes truth and Brooks has fought The Obvious Truth for decades so he can perch in his comfy conservative cheerleader costume.

His bullshit has been nasty for decades and PBS happily smeared him all over their news broadcasts for just as long.

This is why the Right hates education.

It was Right wing ideology that destroyed the middle class. Nixon tripled down on LBJ’s Vietnam War. Then Reagan came in and moved as much manufacturing as he could overseas, creating the Rust Belt. The Bush family kept the trend going, and now Trump is doubling the debt every year.

But to the alt-right Oliver North was a hero!

Look at history. France thought it was to their advantage to support the American colonies against England; then the French found it to their advantage to go against the Americans. Lee and Grant both fought on the same side in the Mexican War.

Okay, but there’s no intellectual debate in those instances. The king said attack (or the equivalent thereof) and the soldiers did their jobs.

In Brooks’ case he willingly ignored all the evidence of his eyes and ears, and the pleas of whoever he was undermining to support war criminals, racists, and bigots. For decades. And now, the final glorious result of all his work turns out to not be to his liking? Great. Here’s a shovel, David. You suck. Now get to digging. And no, we’re not renewing your column next year.

All I’m saying is this; last year people were screaming that they couldn’t vote for Harris because Dick Cheney endorsed her. Let’s play nice when anyone comes over. We can deal with them after we have a super majority and the White House.

Brooks has never given a damn about abuse of power or fascist rule. He’s just arguing to defend the status quo. He has the moral backbone of a fruit fly.

What is this goddamned clownworld timeline we live in where David fucking Brooks is calling for a mass revolt, a literal insurrection, against the pinnacle, ultimate form of what he and his ilk have advocated for and done their level best to make a reality for longer than I’ve been alive?

I mean… at this point, fuck it, this is good news, we are gonna need as many bodies in the streets and feet on the ground, from as many backgrounds and persuasions of all kinds to have any chance at all of stopping this madness…

But Jesus Christ if this isn’t the most ‘Dog finally catches car and is disappointed’ fucking thing.

I want får more revenge than you can possibly imagine.

But the problem isn’t David Brooks, it’s the infinitely racist south who love fascists as long as it means they can brutalize anyone brown or otherwise different without consequence.

Before the party switch the Republicans were just greedy, now their greed pales in comparison to their lust for cruelty. That’s the southern way.

Sherman needed to keep going, for another decade or two.

Given that the midwest, southwest and mid-atlantic also voted majority trump that seems like an odd focus, but okay.

I lived in the Midwest too.

The Midwest voted to be left alone, especially for culture war issues.

The southwest voted to get rid of mexicans.

The Mid-Atlantic voted for culture war issues mostly.

The south voted to hurt people, just like they have in literally every election for 200 years. This is literally the region that fought a war for slavery, lost, and kept it anyway under a different name for 100 years, there ain’t no shame in their game.

Look at the margins, the south voted trump by a crazy landslide.

The small town in the Midwest I lived in was beautiful in the 1980s, then in the 90s nafta kicked in and we were infested by southerners moving north for jobs, bringing their drugs and crime with them.

              They’re a plague, and they’re spreading.

Again that’s just a weird focus since the ‘hurt people’ thing applies to your other examples, but - fair enough. It’s not a contest.

Midwest is ABSOLUTELY not about hate.

They just want to be left the fuck alone.

                  Southwest wants them gone.

The south wants Jim crow back, where they can beat, torture and kill brown people with impunity.

Not that they can’t do that now, law enforcement sure won’t look closely.

A more onion-y title would be something like “Conservative commentator quotes Marx, calls for mass protests and strikes”.

The actual title is more just !ironicorsurprisingnews than !nottheonion material imo

    Edit: You’ve editorialized the title?

    Posts must be:

    1. Links to news stories from…
    2. …credible sources, with…
    3. …their original headlines, that…
    4. …would make people who see the headline think, “That has got to be a story from The Onion, America’s Finest News Source.”

Unless it was changed post-publication, the original is

Conservative NYT Columnist David Brooks Calls for ‘National Civic Uprising’ to Defeat Trumpism – Complete With ‘Mass Rallies, Strikes’

Imo that’s actually more onion-y than the changed title
