Happy to be here! I love finding alternative platforms to the big ones, I’m a forum nerd and soon I’m thinking about moving one from phpBB 3 to either Discourse or Node.bb and having it join ActivityPub. I hope more people will join lemmy soon!

Dont stress about which instance you join. Took me 3 tries before I found the one I like, but I was able to see most of the stuff from each one.

Yes they started banning thousands of active users for “inciting violence” if you say things like “fuck Elon musk” or “my favorite character in super Mario bros is Luigi”

I got a warning today about upvoting violence. The only thing I have upvoted in the last little while is pro-Canada stuff like elbows up. If that gets me kicked off Reddit then fuck them and fuck spez the little pig boy.
Reddit recently started doubling down on far-right actions. Like making it so you can be banned for just upvoting a post that breaks the rules, or banning you for saying the name “Luigi.”
Personally, I recently got permabanned for being truthful about fascists.
For some people, Trump has shit the bed (invasion threats, trade wars etc) and has stimulated a number of people to move away from US-controlled services and products.
For me I left Reddit recently and switched because Reddit made a change that broke the Boost app.
I was just assuming it was all the censorship because any post with Luigi automatically gets deleted for violence even in the Nintendo subreddits talking about Luigi’s Mansion

Nicknames are per instance so your favourites are always available somewhere.
I know! I hadn’t even thought of that until I saw someone’s was like “mee” and now I need to get another account. It’s like how people get caught off guard when I tell them my 20 year old email is just my name with no numbers or special characters.
I still have and use a hotmail email address.
Haha it’s great because there’s always another instance where your username will be available.
Or you can choose to be something different on each instance.
I just came over from Reddit too. It took me a day to settle in and understand how federation worked but now it makes total sense to me.
