If I want to not bother with all that, can I avoid it? Or is the story interwoven with romance?

No need, just have to turn down the characters when they come onto you. Don’t worry, they’ll get over it. You can still be friends!
Though some of us feel a little bad about rejecting them. No in-game consequences, but I take a little psychic damage every time I have to tell one of my fictional friends that I’m just not into them in that way 😄
Gale is the worst. I was never anything more than polite to him, but he treated me like I wanted his D. Everyone else backed down gracefully.

Oh man that look was great, made me laugh out loud. It felt like kicking a puppy.
Halsin basically went up to me and said “I’m making a public salad and I need some of your dressing” even though I didn’t interact with him aside from when absolutely necessary to advance certain quests
