Thief is a truly fantastic film, and in my opinion was Michael Mann at his best, full of incredible moody shots in a rain soaked Chicago.
It’s incredibly grounded and gritty for the 80’s, and easily could’ve been a modern Netflix special. The music was done by Tangerine Dream, which is always a treat (though apparently Michael Mann later questioned his decision to use them!).
All of the cops in the film are actually real life convicted thieves, who advised the film on the techniques used. The breaking and entering was done by the actual actors after being coached by the real thieves, which gives it a ton of authenticity.
The actors do a fantastic job (real life thieves included!) and the story is tight and well told. Bit of a slow burn, but absolutely worth it.
Just watched this movie; it’s solid. Willie Nelson and Jim Belushi co-star! Not familiar with Tangerine Dream, but their soundtrack is far out, gives the movie a Blade Runner feel. (though Blade Runner came afterwards…)
