How was your weekend? Any plans, milestones, major dread or whatever else you want to share coming up in the week ahead?

And how are you generally?

Weekend was good. On Monday I plan to keep healing up from my vasectomy Thursday, planning to work on the 3-4 projects I have assigned at work while listening to The Three Body Problem audiobook from my local library.

Generally I work too much; I keep getting raises but I don’t need more money, I need more life.

How are you finding 3BP? I just couldn’t with that series.

If you find yourself irritated by it and still want some badass scifi, I recommend a book called Blindsight :)

The Netflix series is not bad, the Chinese original is tough for a western audience.

I haven’t had a problem with it, but it’s definitely similar to Hong Kong Kung Fu dialog, which I just have to promise myself I’ll ignore stylistically

Hope it’s all healing nicely! Mine is now already 15+ years ago, took about a week until it was fully healed. But I could already walk around at home and do smaller strolls outside the next day, and was doing regular chores on day two. Just waited about 2 weeks until I went running and cycling again.

Is the three body problem the original one translated from Chinese, or did they re-release it after the Netflix series?

I tried reading the original, but found the writing style way too convoluted for my liking. Same with the Chinese series, I watched a few episodes and it was just too much. Even my Chinese wife agreed that Netflix did a much better job.

Healed up (late reply and all), I dig the book, but the dialog is painful, much more than the vasectomy

Had a big weekend of entertaining kids, and a shitpile of projects I’ve been putting off - built shelves with my old man for my garage and shed, which entailed reorganizing both. Cut and dethatched my lawn which took a bunch of time.

Slept like shit last night and now I’m off to the gym. Life over 30

I’m currently digital nomading in Buenos Aires for another week. I plan to go to some tango shows, do some dance classes, check out the local cuisine, etc. This weekend I plan to go to another town for a bit and say hi to a friend I made while traveling a few years ago. Today is a work day and calls with my life coach/men’s group. I look forward to those as it adds some stability or sameness to be able to talk with the same group of dudes while I’m constantly changing location and people, etc.

Oh, I also need to go to the barber.

I do software and all of my jobs have been fully remote since covid. My company is cool with it, but I also use a portable router from GL - iNet to get a VPN onto a VPN so it looks like I’m in the US for the Okta stuff.

Sounds fun, enjoy!!! Affordable barber shops are my guilty pleasures from living abroad in a considerably cheaper environment as well. Love it.

How’s life in AG? I’ve got friends from there but all living abroad and keep telling me that recently the economy is going to hell. Most of them send money home to their families, and apparently the purchasing power quintupled (or more) in less than half a year. Good for those who earn in hard currency I guess.

Oh yeah, regular people are screwed. You never know what your purchasing power will be next week, so just buy whatever you can. A year ago the exchange rate was like 500:1, now it’s officially almost 1000 and the blue rate is ~1,300. You can’t rely on menu prices on Google maps.

If you can earn not-pesos, it’s still not too expensive to live here. It’s not as cheap as it used to be, but cheaper than the US, for instance.

But overall, public transport is good, access to goods is better than many Latin American countries. I’ve only been to Buenos Aires so far, but it’s a gorgeous city. People have been super friendly to me. I highly recommend it. I have friends that have been to Iguazú falls, Córdoba, Mendoza wine country, Patagonia and their photos are amazing. And Brazil is right around the corner. I highly recommend visiting!

Definitely on my list, my only challenge is that it’s in a less than ideal timezone since I mostly work with EU, China and Korea, so I’ve settled on Malaysia for the time being. But friends are now moving to Mexico, so I’m planning to stay a couple weeks with them and then travel South and have a look around.

awesome! that’s literally the trip that I did. Feel free to DM me and I can give you some tips!

Btw, if you go to Mexico city, check out https://www.theworlds50best.com as they have a lot of the globally best rated bars, restaurants, and speakeasies. There’s also a whatsapp group for dancing salsa and bachata that’s really good there.

I’d love to share some of the things and places I’ve found along the way! :)

Oh awesome, thanks a lot, will definitely get back to you on that! They are moving in February and will stay in Monterrey, so not sure about the itinerary yet, but I guess Mexico City should be on the list. Will probably be Q3 next year before I’m going though, else that’s a bit too much to ask from them, having barely settled in themselves ;-)

Personally I have 4/5 assignments for university due come Sunday, all of which rely on feedback from the first assignment that I submitted 2 months ago. Feedback was released - you guessed it - last Friday. So now everyone is scrambling to get their stuff sorted… Major stress factor; even more so since the second screen I ordered to be more efficient still hasn’t been delivered. Hopefully it arrives today.

Else I’m stoked though, moved to a new country, set everything up in my home office, and looking forward to some blissful years ahead.

Went on a waterfall hike with friends, i feels like i’ve been drifting away from them slowly because i don’t really speak much, feels more and more like a burden to them.

Otherwise it’s okay-ish. Trying to switch from commute with car to bike both for fitness, finance, and environment has been going quite smoothly, i’ve now learning how to ride confidently in traffic even though sometimes it’s better for me to wait till traffic clear out before taking my turn. It’s also very much helps with my mental health too, used to be depressed and have suicidal thought just a few months ago and riding in traffic makes me wanna live lol.

Generally? Garbage. I think my new anxiety meds aren’t working. My intrusive thoughts are on high alert. I switched bc old meds have weight gain side effects, which is depressing. New meds aren’t working and I haven’t lost weight. Very, very shit.

Good - finally bottled 6 gallons of brew. My god, bottling is tedious. Can’t wait until I can afford a keg fridge.

That was me last month. Squirrels. Fixing that led to mouse discovery. I’m happy it’s fixed, but I am not happy about the new dent in our emergency fund.
