If that were true then the people in this thread arguing for the DNC to move to the left would be agreeing with the DNC themselves saying they need to move to the center. But the DNC is disagreeing about moving to the left. Clearly they think they are further left of center than they want to be, e.g. their goals are to move to the right. This is the exact opposite of what you are saying will work. Yes, the Overton window has shifted, but the DNC wants to keep shifting it towards the right, and not have it shift back leftwards at all.

Companies spend hundreds of millions on lots of shit that doesn’t work. There have been plenty of studies saying that ads are not nearly as effective as companies think they are. Do you think that companies are somehow smarter than the people outside those companies?

Being exposed to a product that exists is not an ad. An ad is explicitly something that a company has paid to make visible to people. If a company isn’t paying for it then it’s not an ad, no matter how much it sounds like one.

And yes, going to a store and trying shit out is exactly how it should go. Reading reviews and talking to others is exactly how it should go. Companies paying to manipulate people of the world using psychology is what ads are. Not seeing a product being used in the wild.

You also need to know what the internal GitHub event json looks like. Using act was such a pain I just gave up. Have tried several times now and it’s just easier to create a second repo just for testing and overwrite it with your current repo anytime you need to do major workflow changes.

I mean they are lying because Java does support main as a top level function now. If this was written last year, sure. Also IntelliJ will literally install the jdk and manage it for you. Using asdf I haven’t had to touch the PATH for Java in probably over a decade (used sdkman before that).

The date of the post is from this week so it’s not accurate at all. Java does support main outside of a class now, and it doesn’t need to be static, or take args. You wouldn’t use JavaFX in this day and age either. Installing the jdk is absolutely nothing especially if you’re using IntelliJ as it will install it for you and manage everything. No library is even close to 3gb.

I can give you a bunch of arguments against it. You can just go look at my history if you want a bunch of sources. Not really possible to boil it down to a short and sweet answer sadly, but in general there are much better voting methods and ones that vastly fewer problems. RCV was invented before we had a lot of data on elections and how people vote and we’ve learned a lot since then. RCV is almost always a bad choice if you’re trying to implement a new system. Either go with approval for simplicity, or STAR or 3-2-1 if you want a very good election system with all of the benefits of RCV and none of the drawbacks.

Approval is good and should be used to move to either STAR or 3-2-1. RCV is barely better than Plurality and this ballot is just one example of how RCV implementations can cause issues.

I think you have got to be meme’ing. You literally wrote 7 paragraphs about how to build something for python when for other languages it’s literally a single command. For Ruby, it’s literally bundle. Nothing else. Doesn’t matter if it’s got C packages or not. Doesn’t matter if it’s windows or not. Doesn’t matter if you have a different project one folder over that uses an older gem or not. Doesn’t matter if it’s 15 years old or not. One command.

Just for comparison for gradle it’s ./gradlew build For maven is mvn install For Elixir it’s mix deps.get mix compile For node it’s npm install

Python is the only language that thinks that it’s even slightly acceptable to have virtual environments when it was universally decided upon decades ago to be a tremendously bad idea. Just like node_modules which also was known to be a bad idea before npm decided to try it out again, only for it to be proven to be a bad idea right off the bat. And all the other python build tools have agreed that virtual envs are bad.

the closest language to look at for packaging is probably lua, which has similar issues. however since lua is usually not a standalone application platform it’s not a big deal there.
