Reddit -> Beehaw until I decided I didn’t like older versions of Lemmy (though it seems most things I didn’t like are better now) -> kbin.social (died) -> kbin.run (died) -> fedia.
Japan-based backend software dev.
I literally started with “When I first moved to Japan”.
To answer your question, though, learning to read Kanji is not trivial especially when each one can have a number of different pronunciations or appear in compounds where the meaning can be quite different.
“not being able to tell the difference between something literally at all” is definitely the same as “referring to candidates both of whom you could differentiate between”. He went by “mayor pete” and I could not remember how to spell his late name.
When I first moved to Japan, I had to use lots of websites that used untranslatable images (not text, like png or whatever and google lens was not a thing). I got help a few times and memorized what clicking on an area did more than even what the image was (which would change sometimes). This is how I got by with ATMs and various websites for quite a while. It works until something changes. Today, screen readers, google lens, and other things exist to help as well.
My wife did, despite me saying I’d rather she not. Me changing to her name was not legally possible in our situation (me US citizen, her JP citizen, both living in and married in Japan). (Edit: What I wanted to do was change to her name, but that doesn’t happen unless I give up US and my other citizenship, apply for and get JP citizenship, and choose her maiden name as my name or do that but a name combining hers and the sound from the start of mine rendered in kanji).
Her reasoning was that we could quickly and easily remove basically all doubt that we are related with just what ID we both always carry. Her usecase was one of us being critically injured or something and being able to gain access in the hospital or something else like that.
I would argue that, at least today, it is also used for more blue collar jobs. At least I’ve heard people use it that way.
Yeah, that’s terrible color choice (I’m assuming, anyway, since Pete and sanders are presumably meant to be different colors)
Drone women? That makes my head hurt
They need broken up. The current government’s.lack of action on so many anti-monopoly laws is awful.
Same for Canada in certain cases. Generally considered trustworthy or certified.
They’re definitely defined differently between some countries. Japanese cup sizes are different to US ones
I don’t use Facebook but was searching to see if anyone had uploaded a photo I no longer had a copy of from high school. It’s only been 20-something years, but the number of obituaries I ran across was surprising. We’re all in our early 40s from a small school and the percentage who died seemed high. A couple in war, but medical issues, drugs, and most of all, car crashed.
Well, there’s more than just cats, but true. Wolves, dogs, monkeys, and just about anything else could be traipsing about.
To generalize the answer a bit, if for no other goal, than make the goal to move to a country that better aligns with your beliefs and that you feel rewards you properly for your work. Make incremental steps to achieving that (what exactly the list looks like depends upon the person’s current state and where they want to go) and make marking each one off a goal and motivation.
That I’m an atheist, probably. Living on the opposite side of the world is a close second.
I know a number of Roman and medieval European tiles have been found. I’m sure there’s more around the world because cats gonna cat.
Always has been. This is where the whole “Dark Ages” idea comes from, IIRC: people further on in time wanting to separate themselves as special and more advanced.
I would unironically watch something called ‘Ancient Shitposting’ that focused on old graffiti and pisstakes. It would still be more relevant to history than most of what is on channels with History in the name these days.
Because of decisions that Blizzard under Kotick made, both in terms of products but also how they treated their customers, employees, and fans, I haven’t given them a cent of my money nor playtime. Maybe someday I’ll be convinced to come back to them. Bethesda’s basically there as well for Fallout76 leading up to its release and after. Take2 and Gearbox as well.
Japan is monthly for at least salaried jobs and most pay on the 25th (or prior business day if weekend or holiday). I think once-monthly is the legal minimum, but some jobs will pay cash same day.
