Interesting article. I do wonder why a more of the data centers aren’t located in colder climates. I’ve read people are investigating piping/reusing the waste heat to warm homes and businesses in colder cities. There was one data center (not AI related) that was using their heat to warm an indoor pool.

The water usage they mention looks like it’s for cooling. I’m guessing they mean evaporative coolers? That would mean that the water wouldn’t have to be potable. Requiring the systems to use grey water might help. I also wonder if they could be located on the coastline and just use filtered seawater.

The other interesting point was about the amount of electricity at these places used to generate content. Some device manufacturers are moving towards on device AI. I’m guessing that would use a lot less electricity.

And then weren’t there some recent advances in AI models that didn’t require as much computing power? Maybe this will help dial back their electrical use.

It just seems like in the race to get ahead in AI, people are throwing money and processing power at the problem without worrying about the environmental consequences. Of course that’s usually the way it’s done, all in the name of making money. It’s good to see the industry being called out for it.

It’s currently in human trials. That’s a lot closer than we’ve ever been.

This seems like more of a trailer than a teaser. I’m not complaining. I’m actually unimpressed by “teaser trailers” that are just a logo or some words on the screen. It’s nice to see some actual scenes from the movie for a change.

Rome ran for three two seasons and was successful, but extremely expensive to produce. It was a joint production from BBC and HBO. And then there was a huge fire at that burned a bunch of the sets down between seasons. They were lucky to get that last season put together.

I do wonder if modern tech would have made it more easily producible. I mean, we did get Game of Thrones which was hugely expensive and expansive.

Fox was very trigger happy at the time. They canceled a lot of stuff that only ran for one season. It amazes me how quickly a network will dump a promising show. It costs so much to get one up and on the air. You could move the show to another time slot. Or retool it. Or resell it to another network.

Nest has said these products will continue to work as “dumb” thermostats. You can walk up to them and turn the temp up and down. You just can’t access them from your phone or the web anymore.

It’s still ridiculous, but at least it’s as good as a non-smart thermostat.

Honestly I wish Google had never have been allowed to buy Nest. They ruin everything they touch.

The bike thieves I’ve seen have used car jacks to pry the lock apart. I have no idea if these expensive locks would hold up that any better.

I hope no one gets it. It should be its own separate company.
