  • I wanted to comment on this earlier but I thought people would think I’m crazy if I started talking about Blues Brothers out of nowhere.

I think the original point stands regardless. It was just that much easier to create something new back in the day because everything was unexplored. People were happy to play a video game at all, with that game being good at all being kinda secondary. Most of them were pretty hard and you didn’t know if it was fair or not yet. I had a blast playing Blues Brothers (on cousins Amiga I think), mostly because you got to play as guys from Blues Brothers and those guys were so cool, dude. Yeah, it sucks now but that’s fine. It did something new for people then.

The problem is we wanted this to go on forever and by now it’s very much figured out as a business which was driving it so far. Most interesting things now happen outside of what big publishers do so at a smaller scale and harder to find too. Valve/Steam is keeping half of that industry alive (or keeping it at their mercy) with their content exploration capabilities but you have to swim through a lot of junk just like before, just not overwhelming amounts.

  • I’m nearly 40, recently disabled but should be able to power through the pain and work for another 10-15 years despite my state denying me healthcare (no welfare, lowest healthcare expenditure around, current government continues to cut costs). If fascists come now I can live through it. If liberals delay fascists then they will rule while I am most vulnerable. My only hope is that the sooner capitalism destroys the world, the sooner we’ll have a more humane system, otherwise I’m toast. My survival is not nonsense to me.

  • As a Pole I see some similarities between Poland and South Korea but we also have similar weaknesses. Poland and SK have one of the lowest fertility rates in the world. Nothing wrong with that choice but I’d argue it’s not a choice. People just stopped trying due to being stuck in capitalist hellholes. We’re also very averse to immigration (and apparently nonchalant about our retirement). With that in mind, we’re in no position to lead anything. And that’s just one of many reasons why.

  • Don’t worry, liberal are OK to let rich lend more money to the government, not to let the rich pay taxes or let inflation erode the rich’s saving.

Rich will find a way to profit from everything but I think in this case it’ll be limited to government contracts and not profiting from the debt itself.

Government debt and public investments are a rich man’s nightmare. First of all, they can’t easily profit from it because it’s low interest due to reliability of governments in general. That means that most of this kind of debt is held by pension funds or banks that have to meet their regulatory needs on liquidity and safety.

Second, if it’s issued in a domestic currency then the debt can be devalued by issuing more currency, meaning rich lose out considerable amounts in nominal value because of how much money they are sitting on. This affects others who have most of their wealth in basic possessions like flats, cars but to a much lesser extent.

And lastly, public spending means collective bargaining and non-commercial ways of satisfying human needs like education, health etc. In the ends it’s much more cost effective for all of us.

This is an okay compromise. Ideally in a capitalist society there’d be wealth based tax that would go towards defence spending since poor have nothing to defend. That obviously won’t work since fairness is not a point in capitalism.
