Everyone says to fix it, download DNSMASQ, and disable IPV6. Both of which don’t fix it for me, or pretty much anyone else having the issue since 2015.

just going to say this are you sure you haven’t checked updated and uninstalled drivers and also prehaps checked to see if its a hardware issue maybe worked your way through some troubleshooting guides maybe

I don’t really know how else to troubleshoot it. I’ve changed distros mulitple times, downloaded Steam from different repos/directly, and tried all of the "fixes’ posted online. My NIC isn’t the issue, since I am clearly getting 1887Mbps down in Firefox. If you have any suggestions, I’d love to try them.

Truth is, no one knows why it’s happening, or what the actual fix is, and they are pretending to withhold the fix until I apologise for saying Linux doesn’t just work like Windows does. None of these hateful Lemmy Linux users that are attacking me actually know how to fix it, but they can’t admit Linux can be hella janky.

Steam only downloads at around 120Mbps on all of the distros I’ve tried, which are Ubuntu 23.10, Fedora 39, and Manjaro 23.0.4.

The distro sees my 2.5Gb NIC, and the web browser downloads at full speed, but Steam refuses.

I tried everything. Changing servers, installing DNSMASQ, different distros, etc. and nothing fixes it. DNSMASQ did bump up my speed to 300Mbps for a second, but then right back down to 120Mbps.

Upon Googling this, it’s a known issue. A LOT of people have the issue. Some them say DNSMASQ fixes it, others say Valve fixed it years ago, and others, like me, say nothing fixes it, and we move back to Windows where we get 1900Mbps download on Steam.

Everyone who wants to fight me about this, calling me names, all say it’s “an easy fix”, but refuse to tell me until I tell them I am a stupid idiot and apologise for criticizing Linux.

Someone literally told me to apologize for saying this, lmao. I’m called an idiot, moron, that I am the problem, all because Linux refuses to work, and the hardcore FOSS/Linux Lemmy community can’t handle it.

This place is so tiring. Reddit users were toxic, but Lemmy users are even more so. I guess that’s what happens when you get all the banned people, like you said, and a group of people who hate Reddit, in one place. Lemmy reminds me of VOAT. Instead of insane right-wing hate, it’s just insane hate to anyone who dares pay money for something, or says something negative about FOSS/Linux.

Reddit is doing better than Lemmy. Have you seen Lemmy statistics lately? 📉

I agree that the pricing doesn’t make sense unless you can split it, which is what I do.

Premium is $25 in Canada. You can add 5 people to your plan. That makes it $5 per month for each of us.

Personally I don’t buy cable or satellite TV, so I get most of my enjoyment from YouTube. So to me $5 per month is nothing, especially if you have something like Spotify which you can cancel and use YouTube Music, which is included in that $5.

If you have no friends and you’re the only one footing the bill, I agree that the pricing is a lot. At that point you just have to deal with the annoying ads.

I hate ads as much as anyone, but my question still remains for anyone who demands on blocking all ads and refusing to pay for premium, how do you expect servers and creators to be paid?

I know Google can technically afford it, but that’s not how businesses are run. You can’t take profits from one department to make up for the losses in another department, and as we know bandwidth is extremely expensive, and Google hosts an unbelievable amount of data, and free, too.

Like I’ve mentioned in the past, I have a bunch of videos uploaded to YouTube to share with family, and they are all private. Therefore Google is paying to store my videos, while making $0 from them, as they are not public and making any ad revenue.

I also know that Google is bad. Corporations suck. All that jazz. I just don’t understand why most of Lemmy users think everything should be free, but when asked about how these things are supposed to get funded, they go silent.

Lemmy itself won’t be around long if users refuse to donate to their instance, and refuse to view ads. Even if someone is hosting an instance in their basement, the cost of internet, replacement drives, maintenance, and electricity all add up.

It’s also the toxic community.

I mean no website back then was telling you to block them if you want. They just didn’t use javascript to detect blockers.

Also web hosting has gone WAY up. My simple static website used to cost $5 per month to host. Now it’s $30 for the same spec server. The ones that are closer to $5 are so insanely oversold and slow, a website takes a good 30-45 seconds to load.

Edit: mines like that. It’s the snooze time you set in settings that apply to all alarms.

Honestly makes sense to do it this way. Pick your exact time limited to 30 minutes. Set it once and forget it.

Most average people are afraid of the command line, and really want a GUI for everything. Many of these people’s first exposure to Linux could scare them away depending on the distro they happened to choose, I think.

Every computer, doesn’t matter brand or hardware, never works 100% out of the box on Linux. Doesn’t matter which distro.

You ask online, and people scream at you to run terminal commands or go back to Windows.

You run a terminal command that breaks your system, and people blame you for running random terminal commands…

You go back to Windows, and people say “Linux is so friendly, you don’t even have to touch the terminal anymore if you really don’t want to!”

Rinse and repeat.

It’s not as easy as people complaining, though. What are people going to do? Move to a city in 2500KM away in the next province over, because that province has slightly better infrastructure?

No, they’ll complain, nothing will be done, and they’ll stay where they are because they have friends, family, and a job here.

I understand that it’s easier to do in a lot of European countries, but I can literally drive for over 25 straight hours, and still be in my province in Canada. It’s nearly impossible to do any kind of proper public transit, and it’s not feasible to move over it.

You live in a place designed around cars, that’s the problem.

Not my fault I need a car. Stop blaming me. I didn’t design the city. I didn’t plan where the public transit will go.

Do you really think I love paying $1200+ per year for insurance, $120+ per week for fuel, and $20,000-80,000 for a new vehicle when mine borks itself?

This company can’t stop starting new projects and putting their current ones on the back burner. Their services are all spread out between multiple operating systems. Want proton drive app? Better use Windows. Want the new proton mail app? Better use iOS. Want anything? Better not use Linux.
