Ich hab gestern ein Video geschaut das gegen Klima-Doomerism anging und aufzeigte wie viel wir objektiv geschafft haben in den letzten Jahrzehnten. Und eben auch dass Unternehmen da aktiv drauf setzen, dass sich damit Geld verdienen lässt.
Leider war das Video aus den Anfangszeiten Biden’s Präsidentschaft, seither haben wir im globalen Schnitt leider ein paar Rückschritte gemacht.

Natürlich genau das. Wie bekommt man die süssen Google/Twitter-Gummipunkte, ist das einzige was zählt. Integrität? Pah. “Persona*”! Vielleicht sogar ein Aufstieg in höheren Gefilde der Medien**, und von da in die Politik, wo das Geld dann regelrecht darauf wartet von den Bäumen gepflückt zu werden.

I looked that up because of this post; prices seem to be back to normal.
According to this he wasn’t exaggerating. Tricks, pranks, theft and vandalism used to be the default; candy and organised parties were introduced later to placate the rowdies.
Lou Barlow was in Dinosaur Jr. but then also did Sebadoh in the early 90s. It was dedicated lo-fi recording and had a bit of a status in indie circles. (All facts are tagged IIRC)

That’s the impression I’m getting overall. From the presumably USian comments - for those that got Halloween via the US, it probably never was.
The video tells an amazing story (starts about 6min in, ends at about 16min in). Apparently Halloween as it was in the 19th century was a mix of traditions from different cultures, partly even the result of culture clash. And the introduction of candy in the early 20th century was aimed at placating the little rowdies, invented by ladies that remind me of the temperance movement.
In light of that we should celebrate kids that still cling to the old ways!
Seriously though, most cultures have traditions of at least one day per year where mischief is allowed, and I like it.

This is a really good article for someone like me - not too specialised, touching both IT and political aspects.
The reptiloid nazi twofer (Voyager) was really bad. Does every Star Trek series have one? I don’t remember anything like that in TNG.
I’d go for historical surroundings, but I’d also try to figure out beforehand if the organizers have limitations and strict rules for the stalls. Because however historical the town square is, if you fill it to the brim with cheap candy & bric’a’brac sellers, it’s going to suck anyhow.
Also certain locations are pretty much guaranteed to be overcrowded every fucking evening. 1st hand experience: Cologne Cathedral. I’d go for smaller markets if I were you.
IIRC some actively try to create a historical athmosphere, e.g. within the constraints of a medieval castle.
