Hi, I have mostly degoogled since last year. Now switching to all european. Although there are a few things I am still struggling with. What are you currently using to replace the followings and what is your feedback on it? Feel free to also mention unlisted things which you’ve been impressed about!

  • Google maps/waze:

=> I use waze while driving mostly for real time alerts such as accidents and police control. What have you found to be the best alternative on this side?

=> I use google maps for going to places by walking or bus, which is not present on Waze. I also use it to see restaurants reviews and so on. Is there any platform with people’s feedback?

I have just downloaded Tomtom ami go, osmand and organic map and will be testing testing them out.

  • Drive that syncs with everything automatically

=> Currently on Microsoft one drive. I have a samsung phone and it saves my photos automatically. It also saves all the files on my computer automatically.

Admittedly, on my phone, when I try to go back to old drive pictures, it’s a disaster and nothing loads. Any alternative which would allow seamless syncing and work better than this? I might look into moving to Linux later on when i get the time, currently on windows 11.

  • Google find.

=> oh do I dislike Google having my position at all time. I have samsung find too, but it only detects my samsung devices and ignore my earbuds. Any good recommandation of a service with good privacy? Any which would work with motorola smarttag?

  • While I’m here: windows 11 on laptop. Which alternative set up have you chosen and why?

  • Anything which beats the free version of NanoGPT? I already have Lechat, but nanoGPT answers on the free version have been more detailed and accurate.

Ideally, I have a focus on privacy.

Thank you for your help!

Instead of Google Maps / Waze, I use Here WeGo, which is not open source but based in EU (Netherlands) and free.

After a week of use, it seems about as good as GMaps for real time traffic.

Also it doesn’t need an account, you can import/export your favorite locations through a JSON file.

Thank your for your comment. Just looked it up and it has the nicest look of them all so far. It does look like it fits the bill for a lot of things. It gives itineraries by other means of transports than just car.

Does it give you alerts on speed cameras like Waze does? It’s also only noted at 2.9 on the app store. Any idea what could be the main issue people find with it?

I’ve been pretty impressive so far. The only thing that’s not as great is the points of interest. It is based off Trip Advisor so there’s way less data to work with.

There is speed camera warning feature, ald I really don’t know why the notes are so low. I don’t understand most of the comments on 1 star reviews.

Some of them mention bad routing though, like the app suggest to use a way reserved for tramway, but I’ve seen similar issues with GMaps.

I’ve only used it for work commute between the coast and the local “main city” (100 000+ inhabitants), I’ve not used it in bigger cities.
