IMO, it doesnt pass the smell test, but I suppose its possible that the dog did it. More likely he was being an idiot and shot himself but didnt want to admit it.

Who tf leaves a loaded rifle just laying around without even the safety on? Many rifles are not drop-safe meaning if not made safe, they can sometimes fire when dropped.
