Give 'em some time, it’s just the new version of the cowboy hat. They don’t need to wear those in Europe either, but it never stopped them.
I was in Paris circa 01, Out on the street there’s a 5’ tall overweight cowboy, Hat, boots, button down flannel, his wife next to him in a 1980’s Sunday dress. He was loudly complaining that no one there spoke english and how it was the language of the world. Then went on at great length to explain how everyone in the country was stupid.
Most people on the street certainly spoke enough English sufficiently to understand him, they were likely using it as a barrier to keep him at arms length.
