    So we went from “no, trump would never do that”

    This is the statement that you’re defending. You weren’t creative enough to come up with it on your own, but you’re standing by it all the same.

        I knew it was a different person who originally said it, it’s irrelevant, if you’re defending their position then it is your position too.

        You know that, as does everyone else, but these are the tactics you’re forced to resort to since you’ve been caught in a lie.
