I used to be lukewarm about Dave Chappelle’s comedy,” says Travis Merks of Calgary, “but I’m really coming around to him now that he’s awful.”

LOL that was a solid one, Beaverton.

    Dave Chappelle isn’t funny anymore

      anymore

I mean, it’s not like he was a lot funnier in the past. I think his performance is pretty much the same. How people perceive comedy is subjective of course, but I don’t think I never really laughed at his stuff. Smiled perhaps.

His delivery is some sort of interesting though and he’s fun to listen to.

I don’t care about trans people though.

As humans, yes, sure. But their group identity carries no special valence for me.

So I think you raise a reasonable point, but I don’t think it’s an influence here.

I love how you admit to not having a fucking clue what everyone is talking about, but still assert, full of confidence, that you’re right anyway. 🤡🤦‍♀️

Not that it matters, because you clearly don’t care about reality, but

            A. “just a joke” isn’t and never has been a defence, it’s just openly “disguised” bigotry, but more importantly

            B. Chappelle himself openly admits to not only deliberately antagonizing trans people which he continues to do, but that next he plans to deliberately target disabled people because we’re less “organised” and therefore, he thinks, less likely to push back against his bigotry.

There is only one reason left for anyone to defend this asshole, he made damn sure of it, and he was right too - bigots defend bigots. ¯\(ツ)

It’s not true, though, you understand? It’s just a punch line. He doesn’t really think being trans is the same as pretending to be Asian.

“Joke’s on you, I was only pretending to be a bigot” while being surrounded by and supported by bigots isn’t a great argument that you are in fact not a bigot. 🤷‍♂️

It’s extremely foolish to support Chappelle even using HIS OWN logic. Remember why his show suddenly ended? He realized a ton of people weren’t seeing the irony and were just laughing straight up at the silly bigotry in his skits unironically. It wasn’t making people aware of black issues and it wasn’t helping white people not be bigots.

Then he runs off to Africa to find himself and comes back and … decides to DELIBERATELY TARGET another minority group?! Wasn’t that kind of ignorant heel-digging the exact thing he was making ironic skits about black culture to push against?!

Either way, Dave is either now KNOWINGLY targeting a minority group, or he’s an ignorant boomer too fucking stupid to see he’s doing to trans people exactly what he didn’t want to do to black people.

Either he’s a bigot or a moron. Either way, he doesn’t deserve respect.

I’m actually really curious about this; I see people using this same line all the time: “You do understand what jokes are, right?” or something very similar.

Do you legitimately believe that the people upset with Dave Chappelle really don’t understand what jokes are? 'Cause, like, that’s really not the case. If you legitimately believe that, then I think it’s probably time for you to re-evaluate how you view reality, 'cause you’ve got some big discrepancies between it and your belief about what reality is.

He thought he was hot stuff until he realized it was just giving white people an excuse to say more racist shit instead of opening their eyes to the stupidity of bigotry.

He literally quit his show because he didn’t want to do that to black people… but he’s fine doing that to trans people!? He’s either a bigot or a fucking idiot completely unable to see the problem even after he quit his show over it.

I used to love Dave Chappelle. He gave a huge fuck you to the establishment back in the day, and deserved credit for that. He was punching up.

But he decided it bothered him that trans issues got the spotlight, and that he wanted to punch down. Ok: fair play. Yell some jokes.

But then the jokes suck. They’re not insightful. They’re not full of commentary. They don’t highlight dissonance on people’s words or actions.

And if you’re punching down and aren’t funny, you’re not a comedian… you’re just an asshole

So you believe that the people who don’t like what Chappelle has become in the last few years understand what jokes are, but don’t think that Chappelle is joking?

I think that speaks much more to how you define a joke. From what you said, it seems to me that you believe that a joke is completely devoid of meaning and context; that the selection of material and the way it’s told has no bearing on the beliefs of the person telling it. I think you’ll find that most people don’t share this definition.

Jokes, like every other form of communication, are a type of rhetoric. You can tell a lot about a person from the things they find funny. Dave, for instance, seems to find the idea that Trans people are crazy or lying about being trans to be hilarious (judging from his last couple of specials). Most of the people here don’t share that belief.

The word ‘apologist’ comes from the same Greek root as ‘apology’, apologein, meaning ‘to defend’. Apology is now a synonym for saying sorry, but an apologist is a defender of a cause. Apologists typically don’t apologise for being apologists, if you catch my drift!

It’s a rule of life. If you’re punching down, you’re going in the wrong direction.

The problem with Chappelle is trans people are the butt of his jokes.

No, the people who clutch their pearls for trans people are the butt of his jokes.

Remember his joke about the LGBT car ride? You know the one where the punchline is that no one likes trans people? That one? The transphobic joke?

Right now, you’re on the side of bigotry. It’s ok though. You can realize that people of all stripes are valid. It’s ok to change your mind. We all welcome people that aren’t bigots, but especially those that change because changing is hard.

Probably not, since it sounds like a rather mediocre joke. Like Chappelle jokes usually are. Let’s see if I can find it.

                  edit here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIQ6guDPed8

edit2 watched it now, and can reiterate that Chappelle jokes are mediocre. Even the ad-lib he did when somebody’s phone rang was just … lousy. And that joke was all over the place, to me it obviously wasn’t just “the transphobic joke”.

Right now, you’re on the side of bigotry. It’s ok though. You can realize that people of all stripes are valid. It’s ok to change your mind. We all welcome people that aren’t bigots, but especially those that change because changing is hard.

Well, frankly I started from something you might call a trans ally. That’s my default, I guess. I’ve changed towards being more skeptical. And let me tell you, being condescending towards people is not a way to get more allies. It doesn’t work for smart people, average people, nor does it work for dumb people. Whichever you think I am.

No one buys this excuse outside of those who agree with the message of the jokes. Just because it’s told in joke form, doesn’t mean it’s not saying anything. If anything the best types of comedy are the ones where they are saying things. Like I remember a comedian talking about going to do a show, and it wasn’t until right after his set it was a show run by the KKK. If they have a comedy night and make jokes about black people, is that just joking? I mean, you can’t claim it’s racists just because it’s coming from a racist, because it’s a joke. You’re not meant to take it seriously.

Describe a punchline then that’s funny of his now?

(I haven’t watched him since he occasionally got a laugh out of me when I would skip through the Chapelle show. But usually even back then, he was only funny because it was playing off racist tropes and the uncomfortability added to the humor. He threaded the needle a bit back then, but even he admitted his comedy did more harm than good. Right now he’s doing way more harm to my people, just to grab cash because apparently his Chapelle show money wasn’t enough)

Suck all the innuendo and tone out of a joke and try to tell you it in lemmee? No thank you. You can watch his comedy or not (I don’t care) and you may or may not find it funny and either one is okay. If you don’t, don’t call him a bigot though if you literally don’t understand that he is usually not seriously taking the position that the punchline of the joke suggests. Of course a lot of the punchlines are absurd. He knows they’re absurd. That’s the joke.

Comedy isn’t objective but to the extent it is, Chappelle is one of the most successful comics ever and is widely beloved by comedy fans and especially other comics, many of whom consider him to be the best alive, virtually all of whom consider him to be a top ten comedian of all time.

I don’t think Yellow Springs, OH is the reason Dave Chappelle is now a transphobic asshole, as you’re suggesting. Yellow Springs was first started as an attempt to create a socialist utopia. It’s super hippie dippy, and home to a notable liberal arts school. It’s historically much much more liberal than the rest of Ohio.

Also he’s lived there since like 2005, well before his transition into a transphobic asshole.

In my opinion, the reason is money, along with the “fuck you I got mine” attitude that comes with oodles and oodles of money.

It wasn’t just tired-arse bad trans humour, it was tired-arse bad humour. I got 17 minutes in before I had to stop - I got past the offensive jokes, and then I was stuck listening to jokes other comedians were telling 20 years ago. If I’d kept listening, I’m sure he eventually would’ve made a joke about airline food.

I’m not a coward about words, but I’ve had this point deleted by mods before.

Malcolm describes the difference between the “house **gro” and the “field **gro.”

If someone came to the house **gro and said, “Let’s go, let’s separate,” naturally that Uncle Tom would say, “Go where? What could I do without boss? Where would I live? How would I dress? Who would look out for me?” That’s the house **gro. But if you went to the field **gro and said, “Let’s go, let’s separate,” he wouldn’t even ask you where or how. He’d say, “Yes, let’s go.” And that one ended right there.

I didn’t think he’s as transphobic as he’s put out to be. However, he’s not coming off great and I don’t see why he needs those bits. He’s a better comedian than that.

Like I think I saw a clip of one of his most recent ones and at the end it … the point was that a trans man or women doesn’t really look much like who they want to be or identify as to him. I mean, it seems dehumanizing doesn’t it?

Well, maybe he is as transphobic, maybe I gotta see the whole special to get it and it’s part of a larger gag. In any case, I’m not a fan of that type of stuff. Also, he brought Musk on stage so fuck him.

The transphobia stands out because it’s neither funny nor relevant - there’s no purpose to it other than to be a cunt performatively.

The Lil Nas X song he talks about is what - 2 years old now? Beyond that, the “jokes” are the same thing the daily wire has been rolling out for years - “He has a penis and thinks he’s a she hurrr durrr.”

Then there was the whole “If I went to prison, I’d say I’m a woman and rape everyone in sight” hilarity.

Has he ever told a funny trans joke?

I’m watching a regular YouTuber talk about some random topic and he decides to chat with his audience and he makes the exact same joke. “Hur dur, if I go jail I’d identity as a women and be super woke cause that’s all they care about now and I’ll get off scot-free”.

I think “joke“ is a stretch with that one - it’s not original, not funny, and delivers no meaningful commentary beyond “I’d be a rapist if I thought I could get away with it.”

Chapelle was a decent comedian when he talked about what he knew and had something to say, but this is just pitiful.

Oh there certainly are funny trans jokes, it’s just that they come from people who respect trans folks and understand them enough to actually be funny. Just like jokes about black people, which is what used to make Dave funny. He was familiar enough with black culture, and had respect for black people enough, to make actually funny jokes about them where the punchline wasn’t “herrr durr look how dumb and scary they are”.

          Definitely.

Believe it or not, leftists tend to not be humourless wokescolds and oppression Olympians like the right had to start pretending they are when they abandoned remotely defensible arguments, and had to fall back on being “triggering”.

He’s whatever it takes to grab the headlines. If transphobic comedy is what it takes, that’s what he’s going to give.

It’s his schtick, He goes there because it’s an easy way to differentiate, few people are going to go there these days.

The problem, from a comedy perspective, is that lots of people go there. Ricky Gervais, every right wing late wanna be news or comedy talk show host, every unoriginal Twitter/X jokester, your drunk uncle at Thanksgiving, etc. The “I identify as X” joke they all derive from has been dated since like 2010.

The only reason he makes headlines is because he’s famous and used to be good, and now his bigotry makes people angry and sad instead of laugh. Those reactions do draw clicks, and it makes him want to strike out and keep doing it, because all famous, rich people are children who are mad at people who don’t like them.

you know I think most people understand that a comedian’s “role” is to be funny, right. and then, they will argue against that comedian, on the basis that they are not living up to their role, they’re not funny. dave’s wrong because he’s not funny. if only dave was funny, then what he’s doing would be fine! I think this is kind of misguided, kind of dumb. you argue against them, accepting the premise of their argument, but then you have an inability to fully take their perspective, see the comedy they apparently can see, and then it kind of falls flat. you’re also not the arbiter of comedy, like, have some perspective, some shitheels are going to find that funny, and their comedy, you know, it exists. we have to stop pretending like it doesn’t.

no, my issue isn’t with his comedy, whether or not he’s funny, I don’t really give a shit about that. I care about whether or not what he’s doing is morally right. comedy is just kind of blatant escapism anyways. are the dozens of people saved from suicide by direct consequence of watching dave’s comedy, are they worth the lifetimes of time wasted on watching him? I don’t want to get like morally puritanical about all media, or say that countercultural media has no place in society, right, but I also think that you have to be trying to do something with your media. just kind of throwing it out there so people can whittle away their life on laughing at your funnyman jokes is kind of lame. that’s why george carlin was good. george carlin was actually not that funny. I know, sacrilege, heresy, whatever. I prefer mitch hedberg, pure wordplay. it’s not that he was funny, it’s that he was legitimately correct, and radical for the time, and unfortunately still somewhat radical today. but it stems from the fact that he was correct. dave being funny, not funny, whatever. but dave is just blatantly incorrect in his worldview, here. the perspective from which he makes these jokes, i’m sure the jokes he’s cracking are funny from that perspective, but it’s a wrong perspective, a bad perspective. it shouldn’t like, not be allowed, be outlawed, not be conversed with, discussed, but it’s a wrong perspective. and i find his comedy to be bad on that basis, rather than on the basis that he’s not funny.

Chappelle does this because of something people are afraid to talk about because of the identity of the person doing this. An easier way to understand it is identity politics. Didn’t he admit that trans people get more shit than black people now? They don’t even dog whistle us. People can talk about outright killing trans people and incite violence without any consequences. And it’s not like the police like us either.

Chappelle is past his peak. He’s still funny but it’s been a steady decline since his return imo.

The new special is hilarious but no one will watch it because of the last one. He addresses it in the first 5 minutes.

Yeah the funniest part of his new special was where he said he would identify as a woman to get into women’s prison and make all the women suck his lady dick.

      Hilarious.

He’s a comedian. He has the right and the freedom to say whatever he wants and people have the right to laugh. Similarly, people have the right to not laugh, and the right to criticize and argue with him. We have the right to point out that a lot of people who are laughing with him aren’t doing so ironically. They’re laughing because they wholeheartedly agree and find trans people disgusting and worthy of ridicule.

I always find it funny that people forget the whole story of the Closer in his special, where he took his trans friend and comedian Daphne on tour, effectively giving her, arguably the single largest possible chance a comedian could have?

Don’t want to spoil it but damn, that story broke me.

I assure you nobody has forgotten that Dave “had a trans friend.” Nor that he made sure to pat himself on the back for it.

I think giving them the best professional opportunity of a lifetime is a bit different.

And telling a tragic story about her isn’t really patting one’s self on the back.

Ehhh, I’m pretty willing to give him some broad license in telling it. Given her note, you can pretty easily imagine some argument with members of her smaller, more irl friends, who would probably delete or have done things in small chats.

It’s like when Chappelle talks about being confronted in the restaurant, I don’t expect the guy was actually a 6"5 Texan gay wedding a knotted shirt…

You’re comparing a set up for a joke to what is an apparently seriously delivered statement about what drove someone he calls a friend to suicide.

And I completely disagree, he’s not entitled to license when it comes to discussing her suicide. Especially when he’s presenting it as the truth, especially when he’s using it to castigate members of a minority that are criticizing him, especially when he’s using her corpse as a shield against criticism.

Like, you get how inventing a trans mob that harassed a trans woman into suicide right after he got publicly criticized for transphobia is at bare minimum shithead behavior, right?
