I desperately need to know what kind of conversations were happening since October. Are US diplomats naive enough to believe that there is some end condition for Gaza short of depopulation?

I personally believe that they knew, but expected it to be a fait accompli before public opinion became an issue.

Given this, you wonder what the break points are for the continued alliance, are they just going to keep mailing them free shit like a sad ex boyfriend?

They were probably expecting that they’d hit enough tactical goals quickly enough that the fervor for war would kinda just die out.

Which to their credit, it did, the problem is that Netenyahu’s government just decided they were gonna ignore that and keep fighting and killing just cause even as there’s mounting pressure in Israel for them to quit fucking around and get the hostages back in a settlement already.

We’re probably going to see an israeli electorate emerge from this fight that is VERY HOSTILE to candidates who are perceived as “we don’t negotiate with terrorists!” types, because bibi here is making the case that being like that is a cynical act to cover-up maintaining a forever war to hang on to power for dear life.
