The only unknown (at least to the public) is how much Saudi government (versus loose-cannon individual) involvement there was. And it’s worth keeping in mind that the Saudi government is run like a poorly-organized family business, where the right hand seldom knows what the left hand is doing (though this is changing since MBS runs a tighter but far more oppressive ship).
