    … is pickle a North American thing? I know that German wouldn’t have the exact same word, but the fact that that’s clearly pronounced the same as the English “gherkin” is damning for pickle being the default.

      Pickle translates to “Eingelegtem”, derived from “pickled”, “eingelegt”. Compare with “mixed pickles”.

      In the picture you see “eingelegte Gürkchen”, “pickled small cucumbers”.

      And everybody who pronounces “gherkin” as “Gurke” dies it wrong.
