lemmy.world had difficulty handling new account registration when I tried moving from Reddit in June 2023, so I tried to find/join other instances. People said “it doesn’t matter which instance you join.”

Oh it definitely mattered.

    lemmygrad.ml is just another lemmy instance, but smaller and more specifically tankie than lemmy.ml

    hexbear.net is a bit of a funny one. It was its own thing that was created when /r/chapotraphouse on reddit got banned, so it developed quite a separate culture. It is now federated with some Fediverse instances, but when it first federated there was a pretty severe culture clash that led to a lot of defederation (like, even besides the political disagreements). It is theoretically left-unity instead of Marxist-Leninist but I don’t see a lot of evidence for that in practice

        It is, I just wanted to make the distinction between “tankie in practice but non-tankie leftism is technically acceptable” vs grad’s “so tankie that they literally put a tank on the instance icon”
