While I would like to see more investment in public transport, I would like to see ICE cars replaced and also I would like more options available for disabled people that can’t take public transport.

I hear this line and others like it a lot, but realisticly how many people are there who are so disabled they cant take public transport but arent so diabled that they can drive a car safely? Its pretty common for me to see people in wheelchairs taking the bus.

My mum is so disabled that she can’t take public transport but can ride in a car 🤷🏾‍♂️

As someone disabled who cannot drive.

Both options are required. Getting around rural areas is absolute hell ATM.

This is the correct answer. It’s not even about rural areas. Yes public transport should be improved. Half of the borough I live in doesn’t have access to Lime bikes and I can’t fathom why, I would love to use them to get to and from the stations. But as a full-time carer, I know riding a bike or getting a bus or a train isn’t feasible for my mum. So I will always support initiatives that make her life easier while not making everyone else’s shitter. Too many people aspire for some utopia without considering the impact on those less able-bodied.

I dont think I’ve ever seen anyone say all personal vehicles should be banned, and I would assume dedicated carers would be bottom of the list of people to discourage from driving them.

But there is still always this refrain of “what about disabled people who need to drive” whenever nudging people away from cars to public transport is brought up. I dont mean that as a dig at you personally, but it is a noticable pattern.

I think a lot of people, including myself would like for public transport to be so good that people chose public transport whenever possible. I live opposite a school and most parents that drive their children to school absolutely don’t need to, so a world without that would be optimal. But there’s always going to be edge cases that require supporting.

Funnily enough, I just got back from my daily walk and while strolling, there was an aged car spewing black smoke. It’s things like that why, though it’s only a stop gap solution, I support stop gap solutions like this. Get old trash off the road.

I am in fact! But even there I dont see people saying all cars banned at all times for everyone (though you might get people who want to ban cars from some places or at certain times).

I just get a feeling that people (again, not you personally) raise up “what about disabled drivers” when they actually think “I dont care about public transport and this would inconvenience my driving slightly”.
