The leading cause seem to be Coal and Car traffic.

“…99% of the world population lives in areas where air pollution levels exceed WHO guideline limits – Ganfeng Luo”

Then it’s not a mystery. What immediate actions can be taken TODAY to reduce air pollution? Nevermind worrying about convenience, Governments need to do what they can to stop this madness.

It’s a lagging indicator. Air pollution has been clearing up in many places but it could take years to see a change in cases

Stop cooking with fossil fuels, including natural gas…… somehow preventing lung cancer has become a political issue in the us

EVs and renewable energy - we know what to do and it’s even the cheapest approach but somehow no

Air pollution has been clearing up in many places but it could take years to see a change in cases

From the data I’ve seen, it’s only trending downwards in rich countries, while getting worse in poor countries. Offloading pollution to poor countries isn’t my idea of progress.

Another study posted here also showed that noise pollution is affecting millions, and killing tens of thousands each year. So it’s not just air pollution, but all forms of pollution that need to be addressed, and it needed to be addressed decades ago.

Bravo for China, they really have been a leader in reducing air pollution.

But I also find this cruelly ironic:

“However, the country has faced many challenges since it transitioned from bicycles to automobiles and other combustion engines. This shift led to complex problems for the environment, society, and economy. Beijing became known specifically for its poor air quality and a lot of haze.”

Yeah, but you need to take it a step further …… becoming a developed country far bigger and far faster than any country in history. While they still have a long way to go and ignoring their political system, their achievement is amazing

In order of most emissions created:

#1) stop exporting/importing goods using oil fueled cargo tankers and planes.

#2) kill 99% of all cows and other large farm animals and keep the populations at natrual levels, no more meat industry except maybe chickens.

#3) make it illegal to drive cars for non essential purposes. (And no, getting groceries and going to work wouldn’t be essential)

To do this we need to spend a lot on public transit in the short term

While I don’t disagree in general, if we are focusing on lung cancer this is not the right list.

Cows and other ruminants are huge contributors to global warming with methane emissions but not so much lung cancer causing particulates

In the US at least, i think that would be fires then.

So maybe better funded and more practical wildfire control?

After that I know a lot of factories make a ton of air pollution, but most have air filters in their smoke stacks these days.

            Yeah, I would think

            • ac and air purifiers to keep the smoke out
            • don’t live near a highway or factories
            • don’t live in a smog area like the LA basin
            • don’t work in a job where you inhale stuff, like construction
            • no cooking with gas

I can support those. Seems like a no-brainer if we actually care about the world we leave future generations (and the air we breathe while we are still alive).

Factors besides smoking which have been implicated are

radon and second-hand smoke exposure to cooking fumes or to stoves burning wood or coal in poorly ventilated rooms outdoor air pollution

Traffic pollution likely causes more than 11,000 premature deaths in Australia a year, new modelling by climate researchers has revealed.

How do you know it not just people who assume smoking only applies to tobacco and insist they never have, but instead smoke tons or weed? Or exclusively vape?

Of course not, why would I click a link to a page that’s probably filled with ads, a cookie popup, and an email popup when I have other users to read it for me?

What does it explain, by the way?
