is something actually stopping them or are they just protecting pedophiles while doing a bit of theater about it?

Runaway@lemmy.zipto politics @lemmy.world•Analysis: Charlie Kirk’s death shows political violence is now a feature of US life13·3 days agoAlways has been. Whenever someone says “this is not who we are” they are willfully lying or have had a very poor history education. We can aspire to be better but for all of American history, political violence has been a feature.
The states aren’t over but the idea of American democracy is basically dead. The govt is just really fucking broken. Sure the country exists and will continue to do so, but the systems are clearly broken, corrupt, and rotten beyond the capability of the modern political reality to fix.
As far as I can see best we can hope so is dramatic reform, like many many new amendments that completely change how the govt works to the point where it’s questionable if it is really the same govt. And the sadly more realistic outcome might be that reform either won’t happen or will only come after much suffering and conflict
Woah hold up. That seems like too good of an idea for democrats

Runaway@lemmy.ziptoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•Let me have a little schadenfreude, as a treat21·3 days agoSwitzerland requires training courses and other regulations we don’t have have afaik, though not an expert, which likely helps a lot.
America as a non homogenous society, and always has been rife with divisions as well. These divisions easily, even subconsciously stoke fear into people, prompting a bigger draw towards self defense.
Early pioneer spirit also drilled it into the American consciousness. Needed a gun to defend your farm/animals from predators or other people when law enforcement didn’t exist or was hours away back in the day. Also leads to guns being in the family, needing back ups, a gun for every able bodied person etc …
So a big culture of self defense being the only viable defense for much of American history, consistent concerns about the “others” (for a large chunk of time also includes slave revolts), and relatively lax requirements (stemming from the other reasons mentioned) and boom. Crazy gun obsessed culture.

The newer anime have a few that are darker, some that are not. Quality varies but some are pretty enjoyable. Each one is standalone so it’s easy to find ones you enjoy. And honestly the OG show is still enjoyable in it’s silliness lol
