Creator: https://old.reddit.com/r/BuyFromEU/comments/1jp5y0p/i_made_an_app_to_scan_barcode_and_get_the_true/

I have created an app that allows to scan barcode and get the origin of the brands (with information about parent holding company if any). It also suggest EU alternatives for the product scanned.

There is already more than 1.1m product in the databases and 140k brands (out of ~150k) analyzed. The analysis is made by automatic crawlers, so there might get issue regarding that, do not hesitate to report it. Data are coming from the great OpenFoodFacts database.

Play Store (Android): Productr

Currently there is no iOS one, I might create one if people are interested in the app (as App Store pricing is high, I prefer to check if people like the app before paying the fee). EDIT: As a few people is requesting it and are interested, I will proceed to App Store submission for iOS version and pay the required fee. I will keep people informed about that. It should take a few days, the time I get a mac, release app and going through the validation process of Apple (it takes 48hr according to internet, so let’s see if it’s that fast).

I will publish a web version soon that will allow to use the app without installing it (either android or iOS).

Enjoy ! 🇪🇺

EDIT: Some more information. Cosmetic products are also available on it, but database is quite limited currently and brand crawling has just started. I plan to expand database in upcoming days.

Pet food products should be added soon too

Scanned some random stuff around the house. I find the EU-centric thing a bit odd:

Norway was still in Europe last time I checked. It shouldn’t have a big warning for European companies that aren’t EU members. Sure; word it differently if you like, but don’t dissuade from supporting European companies just because they aren’t EU members.

You are right, I was too EU-centric on the first release. You are not the first to raise the point, I will update that “asap” (in quote because it’s a side project that I do on my spare time, so… but you can expect it for the week-end, if I am not slowed down by the Google process to publish an update).

I’ve tried it out, works great when its in the database. But half of the products I have here at home scanned as unknown, they state they’re notified of it and will add it so lets hope they’re able to keep that up at whatever scale such products are being submitted. Quite a few recognized products also didn’t have a country linked.

Its still young and I think by having people use it we can feed it what it doesn’t know so the creator can start adding it.

As Blaze mention, you are not the first to ask, so I will check the process to add it there.

According to what I read, it seems easy, but I have to setup an environment/configuration for it, so it’s a bit time consuming. It’s in the todo list, most probably will do it in a few days.

The app name is very 2004. Have we not yet left the great vowel shortage of the early 21st century?

Domain squatters stole all the decent domains long ago, it’s only going to get worse.

By 2100, any new company or product will only be able to get a random string of characters at least 30 long.
