Russian aggression and US isolationism push a once hesitant Germany to invest heavily in defence.

“Unlike the western world, Russia is not thinking in boxes. It’s not about peacetime and war, it’s a continuum: let’s start with hybrid, then escalate, then back. This is what makes me think we are facing a real threat.”

He argues Germany has to act fast.

    Good. The sooner, the better. With a strong, Germany, Poland, France and noe Sweden and Finland, a strong Nato presence in the Baltic states, Putin will not find Europe an easy target.

    And we need to realise this hybrid warfare is testing us, and push back.
